The Aspire 2016 Connect "Rites of Passage" Program was started with a seed grant from the Junior League of the Roanoke Valley. In 2006 Apple Ridge Farm partnered with five elementary schools where we adopted 25 3rd graders from each school: Fallon Park, Forest Park, Hurt Park, Lincoln Terrace and Westside. The program seeks to support each of these youngsters through high school graduation in 2016.
Through a comprehensive program of educational support and family involvement, the ASPIRE Program seeks to bring the academic performance of children closer to state averages and set them on a path to greater academic and social success. More specifically the ASPIRE 2016 Program seeks to: - Advance the educational achievement of youth through learning activities and mentoring relationships that promote success in school;
- Promote the social development of youth through activities that increase self-esteem, goal setting, personal accountability for their behavior and their school and family relationships;
- Support families in their initiatives to help their children succeed in school;
- Partner with community organizations and groups to link youth and families to needed resources.
What does it mean to be a participant in the ASPIRE 2016 Program? Students participate in an after school program where reading enrichment is the core focus. A unique feature of Aspire 2016 is that in addition to working with the students we also work with student’s families in monthly workshops, preparing them to support their children’s academic growth.
After its first year, ASPIRE 2016 experienced celebratory gains. Hurt Park under the leadership of Principal Carlton Bell, was fully accredited. Lincoln Terrace third graders had 12 families in the program. Eleven of those students passed the Reading SOL’s and all twelve passed the math, science, and social studies tests. Within the ASPIRE 2016 Program, there were several perfect scores!
