Not Just Another Summer CampThe Apple Ridge Farm Academic Summer Camp, founded in 1989, offers Roanoke's inner-city youth ages 6-16 an opportunity they would not otherwise have - to enjoy a mountain camp experience and gain life skills that will serve them in their home environments. Away from the heat and noise of inner-city streets, young people engage in activities designed to provide challenges, stimulate trust and cooperation, and build self-esteem.
Academic Summer Camp takes place over a eight (8) week period each summer, serving approximately 450 children annually. Our children are bused up the mountain from Roanoke to enjoy the cool green hills and take part in classic summer camp fun like swimming, tennis, basketball and hiking. In addition to the four regular sessions, there are three special sessions:
However, the primary focus is on strengthening the academic development of our campers. We use the great outdoors to develop interest in Reading, Science, Nature Studies, Language Arts and Computer Science. We also provide instruction and opportunities to explore Career Focus and College Preparation. With our older campers, we also look at setting goals, budgeting, resume writing and job searches. One of the goals of our program is to involve each family in the education and we hold an annual parent night to encourage this involvement. Thanks to a partnership with the Elfun Society at Salem's General Electric plant, we've placed over 100 re-furbished computers in the homes of our campers and Reading Adventure participants. Each summer, through a partnership with Roanoke City, we offer 3 to 4 of our teen-aged youngsters employment as Junior Counselors. Ten to 15 younger children are also "employed" as Junior Counselors-In-Training. We feel that this taste of work experience not only gives our children a chance to money, it increases their self-esteem, but it also recycles our resources within the community. There is no fee to campers in our Summer Academic Camp it is supported through donations to our “Send A Kid To Camp Program.”
